History

Attractive for its fresh air, temperate climate, beautiful views and outdoor recreation, western North Carolina began gaining national prominence as a vacation destination for wealthy families in the late 1800s. In 1903, the Toxaway River was dammed to create Lake Toxaway, with a five-story resort, the Toxaway Inn, built along its shores. The resort featured the most modern conveniences of its day, including central heat and private indoor plumbing, long-distance telephones and elevators. The Inn welcomed Henry Ford, Harvey Firestone, R.J. Reynolds, the Vanderbilt family and many other prominent individuals. Beginning in 1916, however, a series of floods and tropical storms caused the dam to burst and the lake to disappear, along with the tourists. In 1960, Reg Heinitsh and a group of investors rebuilt the dam, restored the lake and began attracting a new generation of visitors. The company began selling private home sites that offered exclusive private access to the lake. In 1963, Heinitsh built the golf course and formed the Lake Toxaway Country Club.

Today, Lake Toxaway is a thriving community with more than 1,000 home sites set on 5,000 breathtaking acres. The community is surrounded by Hawk Mountain, Panthertown Valley, Cold Mountain and Mt. Toxaway, along with several wilderness areas comprising of more than 10,000 acres.
